Johnny Mercer wrote an English translation of the lyrics to Kosma’s “Les feuilles mortes” in 1947, which quickly became a hit.  The English lyrics premiered in a recording by Jo Stafford.

 The song speaks to the struggles and challenges we face in our lives and reminds us of the goodness and faithfulness of God. It is a reminder that even in the midst of difficult times, we can find hope and comfort. 

Jim Morrison was way ahead of his time in 1970, but he was pulled in two directions writing this. He didn’t want the song to be just about a killer hitchhiker. The last verse, The world on you depends, our life will never end/You gotta love your man – it becomes a very spiritual song.”
